Aston Villa likely to face disciplinary action after fans invade pitch before final whistle during FA Cup victory over West Brom

Villa fans were clearly delighted with a second win over West Brom in five days but the club is likely to face disciplinary action

Aston Villa reached the semi-finals of the FA Cup for the first time since 2010 after goals from Fabian Delph and Scott Sinclair booked their place at Wembley with a 2-0 win over West Brom, but the victory was overshadowed by an embarrassing pitch invasion before and after the final whistle that will almost certainly see the club face repercussions.

With the two goals coming in a second-half that also saw two red cards in a hotly-contested affair at Villa Park, the home fans were finally given something to celebrate after what has been a difficult time at the Midlands club.

But a number of fans lost ran onto the pitch to celebrate when Sinclair, on loan from Premier League side Manchester City until the end of the season, scored the second to put the result beyond doubt.

While they were quickly ushered off, even more fans ran onto the playing surface when they thought the final whistle had gone - the famous 1966 World Cup final saying of "some of the fans are on the pitch, they think it's all over" sprung to mind - but there was still over a minute of injury time left to play.

While security tried to get them off the pitch and a handful of minutes passing by, more and more Villa fans could be seen to be lining up ready to charge onto the field when the final whistle went.

When it did, West Brom players and the officials were already making a beeline for the tunnel, and even some Villa players too, as nearly the entire home support flooded onto the pitch which could result in a hefty fine and possibly a further sanction imposed on the club.
