Bournemouth vs West Bromwich Albion match report: Callum Wilson strike stuns Baggies to keep Cherries' League Cup run alive

Bournemouth 2 West Bromwich Albion 1: Home side concede their first goal in the cup this season, but still prevail over Premier League opponents

Bournemouth struck another blow against the West Midlands here, knocking West Bromwich Albion out of the Capital One Cup only three days after hitting eight goals past Birmingham City in the Championship. Substitute Callum Wilson was their hero, sending them through to the fifth round for the first time seconds after the West Brom thought they had saved themselves with a deflected shot by their own substitute Giorgios Samaras.

The home side, fourth in the Championship, had taken the lead through former Everton trainee Eunan O’Kane early in the second half of a game that never lacked excitement even though both teams were under-strength.

Eddie Howe, the Bournemouth manager, wrote in his programme notes: “We would love to go as far as we can in this competition” - which hardly matched his decision to make ten changes to the team that had beaten Birmingham. He added that Albion were “a strong side full of international players” - but they also made ten changes, although they still fielded nine internationals including record £10 million signing Brown Ideye.

However, the home side were in no way overawed and made the first chance in the 11th minute when right-back Adam Smith charged through a series of tackles, but chose to pass rather than shoot and Yann Kermorgant wasted the opening. 60 seconds later Albion’s Liam O’Neil put a free header wide from Christian Gamboa’s cross.

The Cherries’ South African forward Tokelo Rantie then sent Boaz Myhill sprawling with an angled shot, while Lee Camp was called into action at the other end as Victor Anichebe set up Ideye. But Bournemouth also had claims for a penalty when a corner swung into the six-yard area by Ian Harte appeared to strike the arm of Craig Dawson.

Four minutes into the second half, Bournemouth got the goal their enterprise deserved. Junior Stanislas, the former West Ham and Burnley midfielder, bulldozed through the centre of a retreating Albion defence before playing a perfect ball to his left for O’Kane to beat Myhill with a low shot.

As the atmosphere increased there were a further three penalty appeals in as many minutes, two by West Brom and one by Bournemouth, all turned down by Paul Tierney. The visitors showed more urgency, and sent on Samaras, Stephane Sessegnon and top scorer Saido Berahino in search of an equaliser.

And it was Samaras who made the goal five minutes from time, his angled shot deflected past Camp by Tommy Elphick’s attempted block – the first goal Bournemouth conceded in the cup this season.

But a minute later, with the game set for extra time, Wilson’s shot found the corner of the net despite Myhill’s attempt to save.
