If Burnley are to win the Carling Cup they will have done it the hard way after they were paired up against Premier League opposition once more when the semi-final draw was made on Saturday.

Burnley were drawn to play the holders Tottenham Hotspur while the favourites Manchester United will meet Derby County, conquerors of another Premier League side – Stoke City – last week.

Burnley, of the Championship, have knocked out Chelsea (on penalties) and Arsenal (2-0 on Tuesday) in the last two rounds and will now play Spurs in the two-legged last-four meeting, with the first match at White Hart Lane.

The other tie sees United, who last won the trophy in 2006, travel to Pride Park for the first leg. The matches will be played in the weeks beginning 5 and 19 January.
