Malky Mackay's men started their Carling Cup journey after a spirited display by Oxford resulting in a 1-1 draw after ninety minutes. Cardiff took the lead after 12 minutes through Craig Conway; scoring his first goal for the Bluebirds, before Simon Clist levelled for the hosts after half an hour. With neither team able to put the game to bed in normal time, Cardiff managed to impose their higher status on the match in extra time, and goals from Peter Whittingham and Nat Jarvis ensured that it was the Championship team that prevailed.
