Even before Sunday's FA semi-final draw, Gareth Barry was relishing the prospect of his City side taking on United in the last four, and the two Manchester clubs were paired together, subject to United beating Chelsea in their quarter-final replay.
"We're probably going to have to beat them to win it," Barry said before City brushed aside Barnsley 5-0 in their quarter-final. The midfielder sees Manchester City's 1-0 win against their neighbours in the 2011 semi-finals as a turning point in his club's fortunes. City went on to lift the Cup.
"We beat them in the semi-final two years ago at Wembley so that could be in the back of their minds," he said. "I think that was a massive step for Manchester City – to beat them and go on and lift that first trophy."
United face a tough trip to Stamford Bridge before they can think about taking on their neighbours, with the replay date yet to be decided.
In the other semi-final, Wigan were rewarded for their 3-0 win at Everton with a tie against either Millwall or Blackburn. Their replay will be played this Wednesday at Ewood Park, with the sides also meeting in the Championship in late April.
