Watford were the first Premier League side knocked out of this season’s Capital One Cup as the Hornets lost 1-0 to Preston through an early goal from Marnick Vermijl at Deepdale on Tuesday night.

Quique Flores’ side, who have yet to taste victory in their three matches in the top flight this season, ended the game with 10 men after Miguel Britos was dismissed – the defender seeing red on his debut having missed the opening two games of the season due to a suspension hanging over from his previous club, Napoli.

Joe Dodoo scored a hat-trick on his senior debut as Leicester eased through 4-1 at Bury, the England Under-19 international also assisting the Foxes’ second for Andrej Kramaric before the interval. Danny Mayor scored the hosts’ consolation.

Three first-half goals helped Bournemouth to a 4-0 victory at Hartlepool, despite making 11 changes from the weekend win at West Ham. Yann Kermorgant, Dan Gosling and Junior Stanislas (two) netting for Eddie Howe’s side.

A former Bournemouth player overshadowed Norwich’s progression into the third round of the Capital One Cup as the Canaries’ striker Lewis Grabban left the team hotel after being told he was not in the starting line-up for the match at Rotherham.

The 27-year-old, who wants to return to the Cherries, left the hotel without the permission of manager Alex Neil after being told he was a substitute for the match at the New York Stadium. Bournemouth have had two bids for the striker turned down by their fellow promoted club.

Grabban’s team-mates made light of his absence, winning 2-1 at Rotherham with Ricky van Wolfswinkel, who had been chosen ahead of Grabban, scoring the winner.

Swansea maintained their unbeaten start to the campaign with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to York.
