League Cup round-up: Donaldson lines up Chelsea showdown

Top scorer Clayton Donaldson earned Brentford a lucrative FA Cup fourth-round tie at home to west London neighbours Chelsea as his goal beat Southend 2-1 in their replay at Griffin Park tonight.

Brentford dominated the game but found goalkeeper Paul Smith, who had a four-year spell with the Bees, in fine form. Smith saved a Harry Forrester penalty and made a string of fine stops to keep the League Two side in contention.

Paul Hayes’ header gave the home team the lead midway through the first half but, after Smith saved Forrester’s penalty, Uwe Rosler’s side were pegged back when Barry Corr levelled matters with 21 minutes to go. Donaldson took Brentford through to face Chelsea in front of a live TV audience though with a 76th-minute deflected shot.

Bournemouth’s 18-game unbeaten run came to an end at the hands of Wigan at Dean Court, the Premier League side winning 1-0. Mauro Boselli gave the Latics the lead in the 18th minute, the Argentine striker firing home against the run of play. The Bournemouth midfielder Harry Arter slipped on the ball to gift possession to Boselli, who  arrowed a shot into the top corner of Shwan Jalal’s goal from 20 yards out.

Eunan O’Kane hit the bar for Eddie Howe’s side just before half-time and substitute Mark Pugh’s 30-yard effort cannoned back off the woodwork with less than five minutes of normal time remaining.

“It was a very difficult game as we expected,” the Wigan manager, Roberto Martinez, said. “We knew that we had nothing to win today and had to be very professional;  really, really strong and I couldn’t be more proud of my players.”

Tom Cairney’s extra-time winner took Hull through 2-1 at the expense of battling Orient at Brisbane Road. Orient had a David Mooney goal disallowed in the first half and one from Lee Cook chalked off in the second. The Orient manager, Russell Slade, was adamant Cook’s goal should have stood. “I’ve just seen it and it’s two yards onside,” he said.

MK Dons, whose manager Karl Robinson has been linked with the vacancy at Blackpool, knocked out Championship side Sheffield Wednesday 2-0.
