Steve McClaren's Nottingham Forest survived a huge scare at the hands of city rivals Notts County before emerging victorious in a dramatic penalty shootout at the City Ground last night. With the score at 2-2 after 90 minutes, Lee Hughes looked to have scored the winning goal for the League One side in the eighth minute of extra-time, only for Wes Morgan to level with a sensational 25-yard shot.

Hughes had the chance to win the subsequent shoot-out, only to blaze over and allow Neal Bishop to secure victory for Forest, 4-3 on penalties.

League Two Macclesfield stunned Hull 2-0 at the KC Stadium, while Mark Hughes scored the only goal as Barnet upset Portsmouth at Fratton Park. Northampton won 2-1 at Ipswich while Shrewsbury stormed into a 3-0 lead over Derby at Pride Park, then withstood a second-half fightback to win 3-2. Leeds United avoided a shock defeat by local rivals Bradford City, twice coming from behind to win 3-2 at Elland Road.
