League Cup round-up: West Ham out as Hylton calls the Shots

Big Sam Allardyce's up-and-down start to his West Ham career continued last night when they were knocked out of the first round of the Carling Cup by League Two Aldershot, who won 2-1.

Danny Hylton scored the winner for Dean Holdsworth's men at Upton Park against the 10-man Hammers, getting on the end of Jermaine McGlashan's cross and finding the bottom corner.

West Ham had gone ahead when Junior Stanislas curled home from 25 yards but Callum McNaughton's big night ended in tears when the Hammers' teenage centre-back was sent off on his debut for a professional foul on Hylton. Aldershot then equalised with 12 minutes left, with Luke Guttridge on hand to slam home the loose ball past West Ham's brilliantly named keeper Ruud Boffin.

Elsewhere, Everton came from behind to beat Sheffield United who went ahead against the run of play when Richard Cresswell swept home. But the Blades then scored at the wrong end as Jack Rodwell's shot hit his thigh and went in. Goals by Victor Anichebe and Mikel Arteta, with a real beauty, gave the Toffees a 3-1 win.

Bolton also had to come from behind to beat Macclesfield 2-1, a debut goal for Tuncay and a Martin Petrov effort completing the victory.

Blackburn scored three times in the first seven minutes – Ruben Rochina got two and David Goodwillie the third – to beat Sheffield Wednesday 3-1.
