Andy Reid scored twice as Sunderland swept past League One Norwich at Carrow Road and into the third round of the Carling Cup last night.

The Republic of Ireland midfielder – who had got only two goals since his move from Charlton before last night – was one of nine changes made by Steve Bruce from Saturday's win over Blackburn and Reid won praise from his manager for his display – and losing weight during the summer.

"I do not think anyone has questioned his ability, but the one thing which has been levelled at him is his physical condition," Bruce said. "He has now lost something like nine kilograms which has taken him down to what you have seen today. I think the penny has dropped that you have to be that way to play in the Premier League."

Teemu Tainio set the ball rolling for Sunderland after 26 minutes. Kenwyne Jones brushed off the challenge of Gary Doherty before darting into the right side of the penalty area and cut the ball back to Tainio, who drilled in a low shot from 10 yards. Reid then netted a well-taken double to put the tie beyond Paul Lambert's side before half-time.

From just inside the box, the winger chipped a perfectly-weighted ball over keeper Ben Alnwick and into the far corner. After 36 minutes Norwich were once again torn apart on the break for Reid to drill the ball into the top corner.

Wes Hoolahan reduced the deficit just after the hour, knocking the ball into an unguarded net after Jon Otsemobor's cross was headed against the far post by Cody McDonald. However Owain Tudur Jones deflected a corner into his own net soon afterwards.

Norwich finished with only nine men when Michael Spillane was sent off for a professional foul on Frazier Campbell, and Alnwick suffered a cut to his face. "We started really well, and had some good chances," Lambert said. "However, when you make individual errors, especially against calibre like that, you will get punished."
