West Bromwich 2 Charlton Athletic 2 <i>(WBA win 4-3 on pens)</i>: Bednar holds nerve from the spot to eliminate Addicks

Championship leaders West Bromwich Albion spoiled the moment for Charlton Athletic rookie Chris Dickson last night by knocking out Alan Pardew's side on penalties, securing a fourth-round FA Cup trip to Peterborough of League Two.

Dickson, who was playing in non-League football with Dulwich Hamlet 10 months ago, chose the final minute of normal time to score his first senior goal for Charlton, taking the tie into extra time after Albion had let a two-goal lead slip. The 23-year-old striker, who hit 11 goals in a three-month loan spell with Gillingham last autumn, did what was required in the shoot-out, but after former Charlton 'keeper Dean Kiely saved from Zheng Zhi and West Brom's striker Roman Bednar supplemented his goal in normal time by converting the 10th kick, Charlton were out.

It spelt relief for Albion manager, Tony Mowbray, who feared that defeat could have damaged his team's promotion bid. "I was disappointed to lose a two-goal lead and when it went to extra time it was important from a psychological point of view not to lose," he said.

Albion had the tie under control when James Morrison's low strike put them two goals up, Bednar having given them a 14th-minute lead when he turned Felipe Teixeira's header home. But Charlton, for whom Varney had missed a sitter, fought back and Darren Ambrose lifted their hopes by pushing home a loose ball. Dickson, who cost £35,000, completed the comeback but it was not to be his night.

* Chris Brass steered Bury to the shock of the night as the caretaker manager oversaw a 2-1 victory for the League Two strugglers over Championship side Norwich at Gigg Lane. Brass, who plays part-time for Hyde United, was confirmed in temporary charge only yesterday morning.
