There was love in the air at Griffin Park

The unusal proposal

Let me tell you about the birds and the bees...

The classic expression became the literal way to explain a marriage proposal during last night's Championship match between Brentford and Birmingham.

During half-time at Griffin Park, Brentford's mascot Buzz Bee (or more accurately, the man inside the costume) got down on one knee on the pitch to propose to his girlfriend.

She said yes, making it a great night for the giant Bee. But it wasn't such a good evening for Brentford fans who saw their side beaten 2-0.

After the match, new Brentford boss Lee Carsley ruled out staying in the job beyond the end of this season.

The straight-talking Bees boss, promoted from coaching the London club's development squad, insisted he was happier looking after the youngsters.

The reluctant boss' admission is another twist in a bizarre week for the Bees, who axed boss Marinus Dijkhausen after just nine games in charge.

Former Blues man Carsley said: "I did not ask to be a football manager and it certainly wasn't something I put my hand up for it. I don't want the job permanently. I'm still involved with England Under-19s. It just happens that I've been asked to be a caretaker manager at my last two clubs."

Asked if he would stay in the hotseat if things went well at Griffin Park, he said: "No. At the end of the season that's it. I wouldn't have thought I could go back to being the development coach... it's always difficult to go back.

"I've never had that burning ambition to be a manager. I want to be a coach and bring on the young players."
