Nottingham Forest were the latest team to profit from Plymouth's shocking recent form as they inflicted a 1-0 defeat on the hosts at Home Park yesterday, Chris Gunter scoring the goal that brought Forest a first away win this season. Argyle are rooted to the bottom of the Championship table after suffering seven consecutive defeats.

At Loftus Road, Queen's Park Rangers seized on some abject Barnsley defending to ease to a 5-2 success.

Two goals from Akos Buzsaky and further strikes from Mikele Leigertwood, Ben Watson and Jay Simpson left the Tykes' new manager, Mark Robins, saying: "When your defence backs off like the parting of the Red Sea you know it's going to be difficult."

The Middlesbrough manager, Gareth Southgate, saw his side surrender a 2-0 lead at Coventry, Leon Best's equaliser coming in the fourth minute of stoppage time. Goals from Sean St Ledger and Rhys Williams had put Boro in control before Clinton Morrison reduced the hosts' arrears.

Preston climbed to third place in the league with a 2-1 win at Leicester.

Leicester had not lost at the Walkers Stadium since last September, but goals from Neil Mellor and Richard Chaplow secured the victory.
