Championship round up: Uwe Rösler has no answer to Wigan freefall

Wigan's poor form continues with defeat at Millwall while Burnley return to the top of the table

Uwe Rösler was given a clear indication of how hard his new job as Wigan Athletic manager will be yesterday when he watched from the stands as his new side lost 2-1 at Millwall.

Rösler was officially appointed Saturday morning to replace Owen Coyle after walking out on Brentford but cut a forlorn figure as strikes from Steve Morison and Jermaine Easter put the London side two goals ahead.

Wigan, who are struggling in the Championship despite earning millions from Premier League parachute payments and last season’s FA Cup win, pulled one back through James McArthur before slipping to their fifth successive defeat in all competitions.

Michael Kightly scored the only goal of the game as Burnley returned to the top of the Championship with a 1-0 home win against managerless Barnsley. Sean Dyche’s side were third at the start of the day and the Kightly’s 65th-minute strike sealed the points. Barnsley almost stole a point from Tomasz Cywka’s free-kick but Tom Heaton pulled off a fine save.

Queens Park Rangers dropped to second after a lacklustre goalless draw against Blackburn. It was only the second time Harry Redknapp’s expensively assembled side had dropped points at home this season.

Leicester City, who are also among the promotion contenders, suffered a second successive defeat as Ashley Barnes scored twice for Brighton in a 3-1 win at the Amex Stadium.Andy King reduced the deficit in the second half after Craig Conway also scored, but a penalty from Barnes (above) left Nigel Pearson’s side third.

Chris Martin’s hat-trick helped Derby cruise to a 5-1 victory over Blackpool, who finished the game with nine players. Isaiah Osbourne headed in the opener but that was as good as it got for Paul Ince’s side, who also had three men sent off in the 1-0 defeat at Yeovil Town on Tuesday. Neal Bishop was sent off for a professional foul before a second booking for Angel Martinez led to him being dismissed in added time.
