Championship Round-Up: Saunders accepts 'lucky' debut win for Doncaster

Dean Saunders has called his new Doncaster side "lucky" after they ended their 19-match winless streak with a 1-0 win over Crystal Palace on Saturday.

The former Wrexham manager was only unveiled officially at Doncaster on Friday, but wasted no time in helping his team pick up their first victory of the season, thanks to a deflected 30-yard strike from John Oster.

"We were awful in the first half – I could see the players were nervous", said Saunders. "I just told them at half-time to relax and try to pass it better but we got a bit of luck with the goal."

Southampton remain at the top of the Championship despite needing a late Morgan Schneiderlin goal to get a 1-1 draw at Burnley. "It is interesting which way you can look at the result - it is either two points dropped or one point gained, said the Saints manager Nigel Adkins. "At 80 minutes and 1-0 down you will have to say that it is one point gained but we had chances to win it."

Second-placed Middlesbrough failed to take advantage of Southampton's result as they played out a goalless stalemate at home to Ipswich. Despite dropping points, Boro manager Tony Mowbray admitted he had few complaints about the way his team played. "Ipswich are a good side who have spent a bit of money and made some good signings and they'll do well this year," he said.

Nigel Clough said his Derby side were "superb" after they continued their fine form with a 3-0 home victory over Millwall that lifted them into third. "I think the first goal, when Craig Bryson scored after making a 60-yard run, sums up what the team has been about in the last few weeks," Clough said.

Their form is in startling contrast to Millwall who have failed to score in over 500 minutes. "We are, as a side, quite anxious because a lack of goals is a big thing for us at the moment," manager Kenny Jackett said. "We have got to be more ruthless at both ends of the pitch."
