Championship round-up: Two off in red mist at Brighton

Brighton spurned the chance to break into the Championship's top six in spectacular fashion when two players were sent off early on against Burnley at the Amex Stadium by referee Craig Pawson. Romain Vincelot saw red after six minutes when he punched Marvin Bartley in the ribs, and six minutes later Ashley Barnes was dismissed for lashing out at Chris McCann. Brighton's nine men held out for 20 minutes until a short corner saw Kieran Trippier score from the edge of the area. The Clarets won 1-0.

The Brighton manager Gus Poyet was so incensed at one point that he threw his jacket to the ground and stormed off down the tunnel. "If the car park was open I was ready to go home," he said, adding, "I don't want to comment on the sending off incidents."

West Ham's Sam Allardyce was another manager who lost his cool, kicking plastic bottles after two unsuccessful penalty claims. He was sent to the stands to see the Hammers beat Barnsley 1-0, Papa Bouba Diop having headed in Mark Noble's sixth-minute corner. Abdoulaye Faye, the West Ham centre-back, was injured in the warm-up so 17-year-old Danny Potts, son of former Hammer Steve, made his first-team debut a day after signing professional forms and two years after fighting off leukaemia. West Ham are level on points with leaders Southampton.

Tigers met Lions at the KC Stadium where Millwall's Jack Smith turned into his own net from a cross by Robert Koren after nine minutes. Koren fired in Hull's second from 20 yards as the Tigers won 2-0, a fourth successive victory lifting them to fourth and strengthening Nick Barmby's case for a permanent deal as manager.

Brian McDermott's second anniversary as Reading manager saw the Royals win 1-0 at Leeds thanks to Simon Church's clever second-minute lob, while the reasons behind Leicester City's keenness to sign Doncaster's Billy Sharp made manifest when he struck twice in three minutes at the Keepmoat as Rovers won 2-1 after being 1-0 down.

Watford earned a 0-0 draw at Blackpool, while Keith Andrews goal saw Ipswich Town beat Derby County 1-0.

It stayed goalless at Ashton Gate between Bristol City and Nottingham Forest thanks to two outstanding David James saves. Forest haven't scored in five matches. Luckless Coventry City appear to be taking root at the bottom, Emile Sinclair's goal consigning them to a 1-0 defeat at Peterborough United.
