Championship round-up: Tyson adds to the chill at Charlton

A chill wind swept along the River Thames, blowing ill-luck in the direction of Charlton Athletic in their Championship relegation scrap with Nottingham Forest at The Valley. Dominant for 30 minutes, Charlton were caught by two sucker punches as Forest, in their first match under new manager Billy Davies, won 2-0 to leave the south London side seven points from safety at the foot of the table.

After 34 minutes Nathan Tyson prodded in from close range, and two minutes later Mark Hudson's weak back-header let in Robert Earnshaw to lob the second and seal Forest's fourth consecutive away win. Charlton have not won in 18 games.

"If you are a defender playing for us you might ask how many chances do our strikers need to put the ball in the net," Addicks manager Phil Parkinson reasoned, "but any success is built on a resilience at the back, and we gifted them two goals. But we will keep on fighting and keep believing."

Better luck for Southampton at Barnsley. Saints goalkeeper Kelvin Davis kept the Tykes at bay with a string of saves, and after 76 minutes a rare breakaway saw David McGold- rick head home to win the match 1-0.

Despite the absence of top scorer James Beattie, likely to be sold to Stoke City next week, Sheffield United tightened their grip on a play-off place when Darius Henderson headed in after 17 minutes to beat Norwich City 1-0, increasing the Canaries' relegation anxiety. At Turf Moor, Burnley's Michael Duff fouled Swansea's Jason Scotland and was sent off. Scotland scored the penalty and added a second in the Swans' 2-0 win, ending their sequence of eight League draws. There were 1-1 draws for 10-man Coventry City at Queens Park Rangers and for Sheffield Wednesday at Ipswich Town.
