Charlton Athletic players will reimburse supporters who travelled to West Yorkshire to witness their side’s 5-0 defeat by Huddersfield Town on Tuesday night.

The result leaves the Addicks in 23rd place in the Championship table, three points adrift of safety, and follows the FA Cup third round defeat to League One Colchester United.

Johnnie Jackson, the club captain, revealed on Twitter afterwards the players intended to pay for the travelling supporters’ tickets by way of an apology for a ‘disgusting’ performance at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The 33-year-old wrote: “We are going to reimburse fans who travelled up to support us. I will arrange this with the club + they will let you know how to be refunded.

“I know words are cheap but on behalf of myself and the players, I want to apologise for tonight. It was disgraceful and you deserve better.”

Charlton interim head coach Karel Fraeye failed to address the media at full-time, leaving fans in the dark and further increasing speculation about the appointment of a new manager.
