Heartache for Wigan as last-gasp champions steal victory
Jose Mourinho's side were unimpressive but Wigan, promoted in May, were resilient and looked like they would earn a point until Hernan Crespo fired a remarkable 25-yard drive into the top corner.
Arsenal, runners-up last season, were also relieved to beat 10-man Newcastle 2-0. Jermaine Jenas was sent off but the visitors defended stoutly and looked to be on their way to a draw until Thierry Henry scored in the 81st minute from the penalty spot after a trip on Freddie Ljungberg. Robin van Persie added the second six minutes later as Arsenal counterattacked.
