League round-up: Madine the man as Cumbrians close gap

Gary Madine scored the only goal as Carlisle United beat Notts County 1-0, the Cumbrians' third home win lifting them into the League One promotion places. County had several good chances to level but Carlisle did enough to close to within a point of the leaders Brighton.

They did so at the expense of Peterborough United, who slipped to third place after a 2-0 defeat at Hartlepool United. Peter Hartley, with a header, and Gary Liddle scored either side of a red card for Posh's Lee Tomlin. But Pool were most indebted to their goalkeeper Jake Kean, on loan from Blackburn Rovers, for a series of fine saves.

Two of the clubs who might consider life at a higher level to be their birthright, Plymouth Argyle and Charlton Athletic, met at Home Park, where it ended 2-2, Paul Benson scoring twice for the south London side.

Colchester United's unbeaten start to the season was brought to a shuddering halt by Huddersfield Town, with Lee Novak, Tony Pilkington and Jordan Rhodes scoring in the 3-0 win. The Terriers were unperturbed by Lee Croft's late sending-off. But there was a setback for Rochdale, beaten 1-0 at home by Yeovil, Luke Freeman firing in just after the hour.

Brentford slipped back to the bottom after a 3-1 reverse at home against Oldham Athletic. The Bees replace Walsall who beat Exeter City 2-1. Dagenham & Redbridge still await a first away win at this level after a 2-0 loss at MK Dons.

League Two

Chesterfield moved to within a point of leaders Port Vale when Scott Boden's injury-time goal saw them win 2-1 against Southend United while Vale could only draw 1-1 at bottom, and managerless, Hereford United, who ended with 10 men after goalscorer Scott Canham was sent off with over an hour to play. The Bulls' Guillem Bauza even squandered a penalty.

Third-placed Rotherham United drew 1-1 with visitors Stevenage, and Ryan Lowe scored twice as Bury beat Accrington Stanley 3-0 to move up to fourth. Accies had Andrew Procter and John Benson sent off after the scoring was over.

Craig Stanley's 83rd-minute header earned Morecambe a first league win at their new Globe Arena, beating Shrewsbury 1-0. Better news, too, for Bradford City manager Peter Taylor after goals by Leon Osborne and Tony Adeyemi saw the Bantams win away for the first time this season, 2-0 at Barnet, who replace them in the bottom two.
