Reuben Hazell's goal just after the half-hour at Prenton Park was enough to earn John Sheridan's Oldham Athletic a 1-0 win against Tranmere Rovers, a victory that lifted the Latics back to the top of League One.
The deciding goal in a tempestuous match came from Neil Eardley's right-wing cross, met by Hazell's emphatic header 12 yards from goal. Rovers had six players booked, Oldham four.
Carlisle United are second after coming from behind to beat Southend United 2-1 at Brunton Park. The Shrimpers had former Crystal Palace striker Dougie Freedman making his debut and he fired them ahead with a left-foot shot from 20 yards in the 22nd minute. But Danny Graham levelled with a 23rd-minute penalty and Cleveland Taylor completed the recovery with a strike 11 minutes from the end.
There were two hat-tricks in the division. Gary Hooper's for Scunthorpe United at Brighton was the centrepiece of the Iron's 4-1 win that saw them move up to fourth. And Craig Mackail-Smith scored a hat-trick for Peterborough United who made very heavy weather of a second League One win, 5-4 against Bristol Rovers, who would not lie down, helped by indifferent Posh defending. Picks of the game's nine goals were Mackail-Smith's third, a dribble past three Rovers defenders and shot into the far corner, and the visitors' fourth, Rickie Lambert's 25-yard free-kick, his sixth goal of the season.
Peter Leven scored twice as Robert Di Matteo's apprenticeship in English management at MK Dons continued with a 3-0 win over Yeovil and Paul Terry, brother of England captain John, got the family's weekend off to a flying start with the first goal of Leyton Orient's 2-0 defeat of Walsall at the Bescot Stadium, Adam Boyd's penalty wrapping up the three points. Millwall beat Hartlepool 2-0 and Huddersfield won 2-1 at Cheltenham, who replace the Terriers at the bottom.
In League Two, Wycombe, retained their unbeaten start when Chris Zebroski's goal saw them win 1-0 at Rochdale and ease to the top of the table. Bury are third after a 1-1 draw at Chester and Bradford's 2-0 win at Port Vale saw them go second. But there were first defeats for Shrewsbury Town, who lost 1-0 at Morecambe, and for Mark Robbins' Rotherham United, 1-0 at Chesterfield. The Millers are still two places off the bottomhaving whittled their 17 points penalty down to minus seven.
Brentford were down to 10 men when Kevin O'Connor was sent off in the 77th minute but held on for a 2-1 win over Dagenham & Redbridge. There were 2-1 wins for both promoted sides, Aldershot over Darlington, and Exeter against Accrington Stanley. Gillingham were3-0 winners over Grimsby Town, while Lincoln ensured Barnet's tough start went on with a 2-0 win and Luton, bottom on -23 points, lost 2-1 at Macclesfield.
Jimmy Quinn, who last week replaced Kevin Bond as Bourne-mouth manager, one off the bottom of League Two, quickly got the measure of his problems, his side falling behind to Jamie Forrester's 12th-minute goal at Notts County. Brett Pitman equalised seven minutes later. The points deficit is down to -14.
