TIPS FOR THE TOP

Graham Alexander, the old Preston and Burnley legend, did not have the best start managing Fleetwood last season, but he has the resources behind him to take Fleetwood up into the third tier this season. Chesterfield, the form team of the second half of last season are well-backed, as are Cheltenham, who reached the play-offs for the last two years. At Exeter, Paul Tisdale could well conjure up another over-performance to sneak his team up through the play-offs.

Portsmouth start as favourites though, and fans will be desperate for a turnaround that has seen them plummet down the Football League having been a Premier League side in 2010.

BASEMENT BATTLE

Even after the appointment of James Beattie as manager, Accrington Stanely may struggle not to drop into non-league. They were so close to doing so last season and have not obviously strengthened since then. Torquay United may no longer have the players needed to keep them up either.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Dave Kitson – The former Reading and Stoke City striker has moved to Oxford United where, if he can rediscover his love for the game, he could still score more than enough goals. Another veteran forward – Jamie Cureton – is hoping to fire Cheltenham Town into League One.
