Millwall will arrive at Wembley on Saturday to compete for a place in the FA Cup final casting anxious glances over their shoulders at the prospect of being dragged into a fight to hold onto their place in the Championship when they return to the day job.

A goal in injury-time by Chris Maguire, an emphatic volley from Danny Pugh's corner, lifted Sheffield Wednesday above their hosts and left Millwall ruing an inability to turn a dominant second-half performance into a result that would have sent across the capital with a spring in their step.

For Wednesday it is a healthy step towards safety and they will take great satisfaction from recovering from conceding a sloppy opening goal in the game's first flickerings – Jimmy Abdou's first in four years – and then holding out through a one-sided second half before Maguire's late smash and grab.

"We haven't got enough points where we are," said Kenny Jackett, Millwall's manager. "There was a win there for us. I am frustrated – we threw the points away."

Jackett rued his side's failure to take a string of second-half opportunities; Jermaine Easter missed two presentable chances, Sean St Ledger had an overhead kick well saved by Chris Kirkland, who also turned away Chris Taylor's shot.
