Many of Ipswich Town's failings this season have been blamed on inexperience, but two 18-year-olds came to the fore to win a colourful East Anglian derby yesterday. Livewire academy graduate Danny Haynes had a hand in the winner that television replays later showed came off Norwich City's Gary Doherty, while the midfielder Owen Garvan gave such a polished display that his manager could not resist predicting future England caps for him.
That Ipswich deserved the win was not in doubt after a Jimmy Juan free-kick cancelled out an opener by Norwich's Finnish signing Jonatan Johansson.
"I believe it came off his chest or his hand, but I don't care," said the Ipswich manager, Joe Royle, of the goal. "We were terrific today - even the most ardent Norwich fan would admit we deserved to win - and I was worried we wouldn't get the result we deserved."
Garvan was the key, alongside Darren Currie, to a dominant midfield performance. "He has a terrible habit of passing the ball to players in the same colour," said Royle. "He'll go on to get caps for his country, I'm sure."
It was Norwich's fourth defeat in five games, and as the Ipswich fans stayed behind to sing long after the final whistle, the chants of "Worthy out!" could be heard from home fans outside the ground.
"I can understand that," said the manager, Nigel Worthington, who started without Darren Huckerby and gave debuts to Johansson, his £3.5m signing Robert Earnshaw, and Zesh Rehman. "Some players are freezing out there and we have to turn it around quickly because our aim is still to get promoted."
Ipswich edged the first half, though Rehman should have given Norwich the lead in the dying stages when he spooned a shot over from less than five yards out. Johansson did give Norwich the lead on the half-hour, chipping over the advancing Lewis Price after trapping a perfect 45-yard ball from Youssef Safri.
It was harsh on the away team and they got their reward seven minutes later when Juan's 30-yard free-kick took a wicked deflection and drifted past Robert Green in the City goal.
In the second half Ipswich dominated. They had looked like going home frustrated, though, until Alan Lee headed a Matt Richards cross across goal. Haynes stooped and the ball came off his arm and Gary Doherty's foot into the Norwich net - not a classic derby winner, but the jubilant striker's slide towards Ipswich's long-suffering fans fitted the script perfectly.
