Two goals from Mark Robins gave Rotherham a 2-0 victory, their first of the season, over Grimsby at Blundell Park last night. The win, at the eleventh attempt, lifts Ronnie Moore's team off the foot of the First Division table.

Robins lashed home from close range in the 26th minute and then bagged his ninth goal of the season midway through the second half to land all three points as Grimsby's poor run continued.

In the Second Division struggling Bournemouth produced a second-half revival that stunned Oldham, the leaders. Matthew Tipton gave Oldham a first-minute lead, but Bournemouth hit back in the second half to take the points with three goals in eight minutes from James Hayter, Derek Holmes and Wade Elliott. Bournemouth's Jason Tindall put through his own goal a minute later and was sent off four minutes later, but Oldham went down 3-2.

Brentford moved above Brighton into second place after winning 2-1 at the Withdean Stadium. Martin Rowlands gave the Bees a 27th-minute lead and, although Lee Steele equalised for Brighton after 52 minutes, Ivar Ingimarsson clinched the points 16 minutes from time.

Two goals in seven first-half minutes helped Bristol City to victory over Chesterfield – and fourth place in the table. Tony Thorpe's eighth goal of the season gave City the advantage just past the half-hour mark and Steve Jones doubled the lead after 38 minutes. Jones wrapped up the 3-0 success four minutes into the second half.

Colchester checked their recent slide with a 2-0 defeat of Reading. Kevin Rapley gave them the lead and Scott McGleish's eighth goal of the season made sure of Colchester's fifth win in six home games. Port Vale produced the top performance by scoring five times in 20 minutes to crush Cambridge.

Hull missed the chance to go top of the Third Division as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Shrewsbury. Luton take first place after beating their promotion rivals, Darlington, 5-2 at Kenilworth Road.

Mansfield are fourth after a 3-2 defeat of Leyton Orient. Their points tally at Field Mill is now 16 out of a possible 18.
