Round-up: Madine rescues Wednesday's pride

Sheffield Wednesday claimed an unlikely 2-2 draw after an enthralling finale to the Steel City derby at Bramall Lane yesterday. Faced with a two-goal deficit with eight minutes remaining, Chris O'Grady headed home before Gary Madine scored with four minutes left to leave Sheffield United frustrated.

United went 2-0 up inside 20 minutes. Ched Evans's low drive was deflected on to the post and Stephen Quinn pounced on the rebound to open the scoring. Wednesday rued missing their first chance of the game when O'Grady struck the post from close range, before Evans scored United's second, beating goalkeeper Stephen Bywater with a near-post header.

But, in front of a 28,000 crowd, Wednesday rallied late on and during a pulsating last 10 minutes, O'Grady reduced the deficit with a back-post header before Madine leapt above goalkeeper Steve Simonsen to score his 11th goal of the season. The point moves Gary Megson's side up to third in League One.

Nigel Adkins, meanwhile, claimed Theo Robinson's goal for Derby County should have been ruled out for off-side after his Southampton side drew 1-1 at Pride Park in the Championship on Saturday."I've watched the DVD of the first goal and the lad is half a yard offside when he puts it in so it shouldn't have been a goal," Adkins said of Robinson's third-minute lead, which was cancelled out by Rickie Lambert with his 11th goal of the season in the 61st minute.

"We dominated the game, controlled possession, created opportunities and maybe we didn't get the rub of the green that we needed," added Adkins, whose team are two points clear at the top of the table.

The West Ham manager, Sam Allardyce, praised his side after Sam Baldock scored twice to help them beat Blackpool 4-0. "We got everything right," Allardyce said. "We were defensively sound. We had quality of play in possession and quality of finishing when the opportunities arose."

Baldock and John Carew, who scored the first goal, particularly impressed Allardyce. "They were our best players," he added. "That is the main reason we won 4-0. You have to give the rest of the lads credit for the defensive work and the supply they gave them to create and score chances."
