QPR manager Neil Warnock labelled Adel Taarabt "a matador" after the Moroccan's two goals fired his side back to the top of the Championship on the back of a 3-1 victory over Preston at Loftus Road.

"They were excellent goals from Taarabt and that's what he's capable of," Warnock said. "But it wasn't just his goals – he's working hard to do the things I want him to when we don't have the ball. He's like a matador, the way he struts around that pitch."

Rob Hulse scored the other QPR goal, the hosts extending their unbeaten run to 18 games.

Swansea scored a late equaliser to earn a 1-1 draw at Doncaster, leaving them without a loss in their past six games. Doncaster's James Hayter scored his fifth goal in as many games but the Swansea right-back Angel Rangel headed home two minutes into stoppage time to earn the Welsh side a point, which closed the gap on second-placed Cardiff to three points.

Derby County rose to fourth after defeating Scunthorpe 3-2 at Pride Park. The hosts had to hold on with 10 men for the final 15 minutes, after Gareth Roberts was shown a second yellow for a foul in the box on Martyn Woolford, Scunthorpe's Michael O'Connor converting the ensuing penalty to cut the deficit to 3-2 . "It was nerve-racking towards the end," Derby midfielder Kris Commons said. "[But] I had faith in the boys."

Bristol City were partly indebted to David James for their 2-0 win over Leicester after he saved a 21st-minute penalty from Steve Howard. "That was a big moment in the game," said City's manager, Keith Millen, whose side won thanks to second-half goals from Brett Pitman and David Clarkson.
