Ryan Giggs has pulled out of the running for the Wigan manager role with Manchester United’s reserve team manager, Warren Joyce, set to land the job.

Joyce is expected to hold talks with Wigan chairman David Sharpe on Friday as the Championship side move to replace the dismissed Gary Caldwell.

The 51-year-old has spent the last six years in charge of United’s reserves, during which time he helped the likes of Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Adnan Januzaj all progress to the first team.

But Joyce now looks poised to take the reins at his first professional English side, according to the Daily Mail, as he sets out carving a managerial career for himself.

The former Burnley and Bolton player had recently been linked with assistant manager posts at Aston Villa and Hull, but the Englishman turned down the positions in pursuit of a top job.

Giggs had also been lined up as a potential contender for the vacant Wigan job, but it’s understood the Welshman pulled out of the running as he contemplates the best club at which to kick-start his own managerial career.

Wigan sacked former manager Caldwell after failing to deliver results in recent months. The side are currently languishing in 23rd in the table after 14 matches this season and have managed to win just two games since being promoted.

Speaking about the decision to sack Caldwell, Sharpe said: "I feel that we need to act now in the best long-term interests of the club.

"It's undoubtedly the toughest decision I've had to make since becoming chairman."

Caldwell is the sixth Championship manager to leave their job this season.
