Chelsea legend Frank Lampard believes that his former London club should offer John Terry a new deal.

Terry announced in January that he would be leaving Stamford Bridge after the club hierarchy decided not to extend his contract.

Even with the recent loss of Kurt Zouma to injury, reports suggest that the Chelsea skipper will not be staying on at the club.

But Lampard, who left Chelsea in the summer of 2014, has called on the club to offer Terry a new deal.

Speaking to ShortList, Lampard said: “I would like to see them offer it. I think it’s obvious John wants it and I think he can still stay at Chelsea.

“Of course I’m friends with John, but purely from a football perspective and from what he’s done on the pitch, and as a starting player in all their big and important games when he’s started them this season, I think he’s been their best defender this year.”

Guus Hiddink has echoed a similar sentiment and said that if the decision was down to him he would give Terry a new contract.

His remarks came in the wake of Chelsea’s draw against Everton in which the skipper scored a brilliant stoppage-time equaliser to salvage a point for the Blues.

Lampard added: "What John offers is a link with the fans and an appreciation of the young players who he would want to help come through. He’s Mr Chelsea.

“Those are the sorts of players you need at the club.”

With reports circulating over Terry’s next destination, Lampard, who now plays for New York City FC, has welcomed the prospect of a reunion with his former teammate.

"He’s the best defender I ever played with, quite comfortably,” he said. “So if Chelsea let him go and John’s sitting there, I’ll get his plane ticket and get him over here."
