Bayern add heat to derby

Interest centres on derby matches in both Germany and Italy this weekend when Bayern Munich meet their city rivals TSV 1860 in the Bundesliga and Juventus renew acquaintance with promoted Torino in Serie A.

Munich derbies are by tradition hard-fought battles and today's 194th promises to maintain the pattern, particularly after the Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer commented, somewhat patronisingly, that the game is of little consequence to his club beyond a chance to gain points. "Nobody at Bayern talks about the derby these days," Beckenbauer said.

"It's different for 1860 because they don't have anything else. But, for us, the times when the matches against them were the two highlights of the season are over."

Juventus, by contrast, will not take Torino lightly tomorrow after a draw against Lecce followed by a home defeat to the champions Roma punctured their bright start to the season.
