Danny Welbeck’s double for England not only condemned Switzerland to a 2-0 defeat, but consigned his former club Manchester United to a torrent of abuse and laughter as fans took to social media to mock their decision to sell the 23-year-old.
The new Arsenal signing enjoyed his finest moment in the England shirt to date as he scored twice to banish memories of the dire World Cup performance and get the Three Lions’ European Championship 2016 qualifying campaign off to the perfect start.
While fans were given something to cheer about – the away trip to Switzerland was undoubtedly England’s toughest match of a straight-forward path to France 2016 – it took a handful of seconds for the first memes to appear on social media crowning Welbeck as England’s new hero and mocking United for selling him in the summer.
They included Welbeck’s face superimposed on Sir Bobby Moore as he lifted the 1966 World Cup, Welbeck replacing the Queen on a £10 note – ten times Raheem Sterling, it seems – and the generic ‘Arsene Wenger was right’ meme that was no doubt pushed by jubilant Arsenal fans eager to see their new signing in action.
A wave of ‘Dat Guy’ tweets also surfaced, with the striker sometimes known simply as ‘Dat Guy’.
