Roy Hodgson said that the England medical staff had no notion that Fabian Delph was close to his unusually early breakdown which came nine seconds into the game against Switzerland and could mean another lay-off for the new Manchester City midfielder.

Restored to the starting line-up, Delph pulled up almost immediately as he challenged for the ball and was replaced with Ross Barkley. Hodgson said that Delph had warmed up as usual and showed no signs of weakness in the days before the match.

Hodgson said: “He pulled his hamstring. No, [Delph was] not [a concern] at all. He's trained every session, felt good, played in San Marino. It was just that burst, that acceleration. He felt it's a definite pull. How serious, a scan will have to show us.

“We're very disappointed, as is he. It's not something that we could have prevented because there was no risk putting him on the field. I can't remember having to make a change before after nine seconds. It robbed us of one early on. It gave us a chance to play Ross Barkley, who had been unlucky to lose his place.”
