England man for man

David James
Generally steady. Fortunate that his worst error, a mis-kicked first-half clearance, went unpunished. Made several good saves, not least a vital stop from Nihat. Marks: 6/10

Gary Neville
Did competently in limiting attacks on his flank although he was given the slip by Sergen on occasion. Forward forays not as constructive as usual. 6

Sol Campbell
The rock from which England's vital point was hewn. Calm, commanding, composed on the ball, intuitive and clinical when blocking and clearing.8

John Terry
Rendered Rio Ferdinand's absence immaterial, staking a future claim with a mature, efficient, display. Powerful in the air and thwarted Hakan. 7.5

Ashley Cole
Saved from himself because lack of cover ahead forced him to concentrate, quite adequately, on his defensive duties. 6

David Beckham
Full marks for effort and keeping his cool, minus a few for lack of bite and that penalty miss. 7

Steven Gerrard
At his best, as usual, when marauding forward with ball at his feet (as when he won the penalty) or when picking out passes for others to exploit. England still have not lost with him playing. 7

Nicky Butt
Worked tirelessly in the anchor role of the midfield diamond with a typically harrying, occasionally overzealous, approach.7

Paul Scholes
Did lots of running forward, more than his share of tracking back, and was involved with plenty of well-intentioned interplay as a conduit between Beckham and Rooney.7

Emile Heskey
A big bustling, decoy, he continues to put the team before personal glory. Or else continued to lack a final touch. 6

Wayne Rooney
Energetic, resourceful, willing and more than able. Generally rattled Turkey. His attitude was far from temperamental. His touch, under pressure, was. 7

Kieron Dyer
Replaced Rooney and immediately got behind the Turkish defence. Added pace, which frightened the home side sufficiently for Rustu to try to send him off on a stretcher. 6

Darius Vassell
Invariably raises the tempo when he's used as a late substitute and did so again. Looked much likelier than Heskey to score. 6

Frank Lampard
Barely time to kick the ball, although he did manage one half chance that was blocked.
