England Man-For-Man marking

Joe Hart

Had little to do before Elsad Zverotic's deflected shot snuck in; Hart might have done better. Saved well twice in the second half but was caught underneath Savic's cross for the equaliser. 5/10

Phil Jones

Often found himself exposed against Simon Vukcevic on his international debut: made some good interventions but beaten a few times. Could have conceded a penalty to Jovetic. 5

Gary Cahill

A much harder examination than he had in Sofia. He started confidently but was negligent for Montenegro's first and lost Andrija Delibasic for the second goal. 4

John Terry

Looked more comfortable than some of the others. Made some important near-post interceptions under intense pressure. Like Cahill, he did not close down Zverotic for Montenegro's first goal. 6

Ashley Cole

Less incisive in the final third than usual, and gave the ball away too often. Defensively competent. 5

Scott Parker

Executed his brief well in the first half: receiving the ball from the centre-backs and moving it on briskly. Failed to exercise the same control after the break. 5

Gareth Barry

His passing was more ambitious than Parker's, at the cost of possession more often than Capello would have liked in the ragged second half. 5

Theo Walcott

His cross to Ashley Young for the opening goal was as good a delivery as he has produced at the top level. After that, though, this was his usual mix of blind alleys and bad decisions. 4

Wayne Rooney

Both goals started with Rooney dropping deep: he found Walcott who crossed for Young, and threaded in Young who set up Darren Bent. Jeopardised the lead when sent off for a brainless kick on Miodrag Dzudovic, recalling all his worst tendencies. 4

Ashley Young

Young kept the width well, but was involved in both goals while venturing inside: he headed in Walcott's cross at the far post, and crossed to Bent for the second. Limped off in the second half. 6

Darren Bent

His movement off the shoulder of the Montenegrin centre-backs caused them problems, though he was rarely involved in build-up play. Took his first-half goal neatly. 5

Off the bench

Stewart Downing (for Young, 60)

Very quiet after coming on. 4

Frank Lampard (for Bent, 64)

Improved England's midfield control in a difficult final half-hour. 5

Danny Welbeck (for Walcott, 75)

Held the ball up well once or twice, doing a tough cameo job leading the line. 5
