England vs Iceland: Harry Redknapp has 'no faith whatsoever' in the FA's ability to find Roy Hodgson's successor

Harry Redknapp, the man overlooked by the Football Association four years ago, has revealed he has “no faith whatsoever” in their ability to find Roy Hodgson’s successor as England manager.

Hodgson announced he would leave his post following the abject 2-1 defeat to Iceland which curtailed their European Championship aspirations in the second round in Nice.

Critics have since labelled the result as the worst in English football history as the national side yet again struggled to replicate superb form in qualifying at a major competition.

Redknapp was favourite to replace Fabio Capello in 2012 after the Italian’s shock resignation in 2012 but, despite impressing at Tottenham, the 69-year-old never received a call from the FA.

Speaking in his regular column for the Daily Telegraph, the former West Ham United and Queens Park Rangers manager said: “Can anyone trust the FA to get the right man? They gave the job to Hodgson and he has failed spectacularly for the last two tournaments or even three if you consider Euro 2012.

“I'm seeing Gary Neville being made one of the favourites to succeed Hodgson but how the hell can he be considered after the job he did at Valencia? He should be culpable, he has never coached proper players and it would just be jobs for the boys if he was to be appointed.

“We've got the farcical situation of Dan Ashworth [FA director of elite development] picking the next England manager and I'm really not sure about his credentials either. It appears that anyone connected with West Brom seems to have a chance.

“I've got no idea where we go from here. Brendan Rodgers has taken the Celtic job so there's no chance of that while Eddie Howe is still too young.”

Redknapp, who endured a brief spell as manager of Jordan this year which included the 5-1 defeat by Australia, has also moved to distance himself from the post.

“You can count me out - I've made it clear how I'd have liked the job in the past but they aren't going to consider me now.

“Iceland's win over England has to go down as one of the biggest embarrassments in our history. They have got players who can't even get in Charlton Athletic's team and they made us look very a shambles.

“We never looked like finding an equaliser and it was the footnote to an awful tournament performance.”
