Euro 2016: Wales to face Northern Ireland in round of 16 after Republic of Ireland qualify

The 'Battle of Britain' was confirmed following the Republic's late victory over Italy

Wales will play Northern Ireland in the round of 16 at the European Championships in France after the Republic of Ireland beat Italy to qualify.

Martin O’Neill’s side secured progression as one of the competition’s best third-placed sides with a late Robbie Brady goal in Lille.

The Republic of Ireland will now play France, the host nation and winners of Group A, in Lyon on Sunday 26 June in a 3.00pm (BST) kick-off.

The win also set up a ‘Battle of Britain’ between Wales, who topped Group B ahead of England, will play Northern Ireland, who qualified after taking three points and third-place in Group C.
