Guus Hiddink leaves Netherlands: Louis van Gaal's replacement resigns less than a year after taking Dutch job

68-year-old Hiddink will step down tomorrow after a difficult start to their Euro 2016 qualifing campaign

Guus Hiddink is to leave his post as Holland coach.

The 68-year-old only took over from Louis van Gaal after the 2014 World Cup, but the Dutch Football Association said in a statement on its official website that Hiddink would leave his role on July 1.

Holland only lie third in their Euro 2016 qualifying group, behind Iceland and Czech Republic.

Hiddink's contract had been due to run until Euro 2016.

"I am sorry it went this way," Hiddink, who was also in charge of Holland from 1994 to 1998, said on the KNVB's official website.

"I thought it was an honour to again coach the Dutch national team and I wish my successor, the staff and the players every success on the way to the European Championships in France."

KNVB director Bert van Oostveen said: "I regret this development. Unfortunately, the results of Guus' work were not immediately visible for everyone. We thank Guus for his efforts."

The KNVB said the other members of the Holland coaching staff would remain in their posts.

Holland have lost two of their six qualifying games so far and face a battle to qualify for the finals.
