International round-up: Sami Khedira clinches Germany's historic win
Wednesday 06 February 2013
Germany came from behind to beat France for the first time in 26 years as Joachim Löw’s side triumphed 2-1 in Paris.
Mathieu Valbuena gave the hosts the lead on the stroke of half-time with a close-range header only for Thomas Müller to evade Patrice Evra to equalise for Germany in the 51st minute. Sami Khedira wrapped it up from Mesut Ozil's pass with 17 minutes left, with Evra again found wanting.
Ciaran Clark and Wes Hoolahan each scored their first senior international goals as the Republic of Ireland claimed a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Poland in Dublin. The Aston Villa defender's 35th-minute strike and the Norwich midfielder's effort 14 minutes from time were enough to end a run of two successive defeats at the Aviva Stadium.
Northern Ireland are without a win in 18 months after they were held to a 0-0 draw by Malta. Gareth McAuley did have the ball in the net in the 18th minute for Michael O'Neill's side but it was ruled out for pushing.
Pedro made it nine goals in six games for Spain as the world champions beat Uruguay 3-1 in Qatar. Cesc Fabregas's speculative long-range effort gave Spain the lead after a blunder by goalkeeper Fernando Muslera but Cristian Rodriguez soon equalised. Two second-half strikes from Pedro, one set up by a fine cross from Barcelona team-mate Fabregas, sealed victory for Spain.
A last-minute equaliser from Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Marco Verratti earned Italy a 1-1 draw with the Netherlands.
Manchester City's Sergio Aguero scored as Argentina won 3-2 against Sweden in Stockholm but Lionel Messi for once failed to find the back of the net.
Portugal were beaten 3-2 at home by Ecuador despite Christian Ronaldo's first-half volley. Felipe Caicedo, once of Manchester City, hit a spectacular winner.
