The Uruguayan captain Diego Lugano has denied that Luis Suarez bit Giorgio Chiellini in Tuesday's clash with Italy and has criticised the English press for not focusing on his side's qualification for the last 16.

Speaking after his side's morning training, Lugano maintained that the bite on the right shoulder of Chiellini, shown by television cameras during the match, did not happen and was the result of speculation after a coming together between the player and Suarez.

UPDATE: Luis Suarez banned for nine matches

"What incident? The footage doesn't show anything, you can speculate from it but it's nothing important," said Lugano in response to a question from an English speaking journalist.

"It appears that the English press keep coming back to this situation, I can't find any other explanation, but I am happy with yesterday's win," he added.

Football's world governing body Fifa has promised that its disciplinary committee will make a quick decision on Luis Suarez.

"This has happened to create a controversy, which is always important but doesn't mean anything. Simply put, Luis tries to be psychologically and emotionally stronger than his rival," said Lugano.
