Welcome to The Independent’s coverage of Euro 2016 as Poland and Portugal lock horns for a place in the semi-finals of the competition.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s band of not-so merry men arrive at the Stade Vélodrome having proved their doubters wrong, many of whom thought an early group stage exit was on the cards despite being able to call upon the eclectic Real Madrid forward’s talents.

Poland, meanwhile, continue to make steady progress after defeating Switzerland on penalties in the second round. Despite Robert Lewandowski suffering a frustrating tournament in France, the Poles will be confident of progressing.

  • Poland 1-1 Portugal (aet, Portugal win 5-3 on penalties)
  • Robert Lewandowski opened scoring in second minute
  • Renato Sanches levelled from distance before the break
  • No further goals before end of extra-time
  • Jakub Blaszczykowski has penalty saved

One player to look out for tonight: Surprisingly excluded for Portugal’s opening draw with Iceland, Carvalho has been a mainstay ever since. Perennially linked with Europe’s top clubs, the highly rated 24 year-old defensive midfielder curiously remains at Sporting Lisbon.

The standout performer at last summer’s European under-21 championships, the languid Carvalho can make the game look ridiculously easy at his best.
