Rio Ferdinand pulled out of the England squad today due to his ongoing medical and training issues.

England manager Roy Hodgson chose not to speak to the Manchester United defender before announcing the 34-year-old had been included in his squad. Had he done so, it might have saved some unnecessary confusion.

But Hodgson is by no means the first England manager to suffer a communications breakdown. Here, we take a look at some others...
