Roy Hodgson calls on Phil Jagielka as Gareth Barry is forced to withdraw from England's Euro 2012 squad

Roy Hodgson lost the second member of his original 23-man Euro 2012 squad to injury yesterday when Gareth Barry was forced to withdraw after scans revealed the extent of damage in a stomach muscle torn during Saturday's friendly win over Norway.

Barry will be replaced in the squad by Everton's Phil Jagielka, taking the number of defenders back up to the orthodox eight from the original seven, although with Phil Jones capable of operating in midfield. It is the first time that Jagielka, 29, has been selected in a tournament squad for England.

Hodgson has to submit his 23-man squad to Uefa at 11am today with Jack Butland in for the injured Norwich City goalkeeper John Ruddy. The England manager is confident that Danny Welbeck, Scott Parker and Glen Johnson have all sufficiently recovered from their injury problems not to be concerns when it comes to naming the 23 players.

The rest of the England squad meets today with Wayne Rooney as well as the Chelsea contingent of Frank Lampard, John Terry, Ashley Cole and Gary Cahill joining up with the rest of the players for the first time. The re-introduction of four of the most experienced players in the England set-up, with 328 caps between them, is bound to change the dynamic to some extent. The atmosphere in the squad has been very good so far and Hodgson and his coaching staff have placed great store in the upbeat mood around the camp.

Hodgson kept true to his word that he would not take players to Poland and Ukraine who were not completely fit. Although he could feasibly have given Barry time to recover from the injury, described as a tear to the lower abdomen, it was judged too much of a risk even though England's first game is not until 11 June.

Hodgson said: "I'm very disappointed to lose Gareth, not only was he a member of my original 23-man squad but he has featured prominently in the England team over the last few years. I know how much he wanted to be part of the tournament but I'm sure he will still have a part to play with England after the Euros. I wish him a speedy recovery."

Barry, 31, has 53 caps but has only ever played three games at a major tournament – all at the last World Cup finals at South Africa. He was picked as a 19-year-old as part of Kevin Keegan's Euro 2000 squad but never played a game and won just four caps between November 2000 and February 2007 when he established himself as a regular under Steve McClaren.
