Roy Hodgson in England talks - the reaction

Following the news that West Brom boss Roy Hodgson is in talks with the FA to take over as manager of England, players and pundits throughout the country have had their say on the decision.

Earlier this year Hodgson commented “I would hope if I was offered the England job, it would be with the backing of the important people — the fans and media.”

Here is some of the day’s best reaction...

Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp

"I wish him [Hodgson] all the best. He's a great guy. I've got a great job here (at Spurs). I don't hold grudges."

Former England winger John Barnes

"Roy Hodgson is as good as anyone, he's competent, he's a good manager and he's proven at international level, although the expectations with Switzerland and Finland are not what they are at England.”

Former England player Matt Le Tissier

"It seems to me that the FA has gone for someone who's going to do as he's told (and) isn't going to cost anything in terms of compensation,"

West Brom midfielder Keith Andrews

'The gaffer is being linked with England for a reason — the reason is he’s very good. If you ask the players, or players who’ve worked under him at previous clubs, the feedback is positive.”

Former Fulham goalkeeper Asmir Begovic

"Fair play to Roy Hodgson. Great manager and would be a great appointment for the FA!"

West Brom midfielder Steven Reid

"Be very hard to turn down England manager's job!!"

Bolton manager Owen Coyle

“If Roy decides to take the job, there is no doubt he ticks every box in terms of what England are looking for. He has a proven track record and international experience”

England World Cup winner Geoff Hurst

"I thought Harry was probably the outstanding candidate at the time because he has had success with Tottenham at a higher level"

Former England striker Gary Linekar

“Roy Hodgson's a wily old fox with bags of experience at all levels of the game. Tactically may bring out the best in England at the Euros”

Television pundit Mark Lawrenson

"Harry is an excellent man-manager and I believe that Hodgson is second choice, whatever the FA says.

"I believe Redknapp will have been spoken to at some stage and he maybe said he doesn't want it at this time."
