Sweden

Andreas Isaksson: Could do nothing to stop Carroll header. Dreadful attempt to save Walcott’s shot. Completely off balance. Should have saved it. Otherwise made some excellent saves especially from Parker, Terry and Gerrard. 6

Andreas Granqvist: Looked uncomfortable at right back and clumsy going forward. Lost the ball on several occasions. Will be disappointed to have lost Carroll for his goal. Unsurprising he did not make it at Wigan. Replaced by Lustig after 65 minutes. 4

Jonas Olsson: Brought in because of his familiarity with the English playing style. Found Andy Carroll a real handful. Turned by Welbeck on occasions. 5

Martin Olsson: Eager to get down left flank and support Elm. Put under extreme pressure by industrious Milner. Made to look lethargic by Walcott for England’s third goal. 6

Olof Mellberg: Did well with equaliser to get shot away. Found space and converted well to score second goal. Lack of pace exploited by Welbeck down the channel, however he stuck to his task well and never shirked a challenge. 7

Rasmus Elm: Long throws proved dangerous. Otherwise offered little on left flank. Glen Johnson did well to stifle him of opportunities. 5

Sebastian Larsson: Put through Ibrahimovic with lovely ball. Some neat touches on right wing. Great deep cross for Mellberg’s second goal. 6

Anders Svensson: Sat deep to try and compact the midfield and allow Kallstrom to get forward. Worked hard and ran tirelessly. 6

Kim Kallstrom: Tried to get forward and support strikers. Nullified by Gerrard in first half. Came into the game a lot more when England stopped pressing. 6

Zlatan Ibrahimovic: Dropped very deep to get involved. Stretched defence with pace on occasions and showed real strength. Sweden’s most threatening offensive player but final product was sometimes poor. 7

Johan Elmander: Anonymous. Lacked service. Did not display incision or spark when he did get the ball. Substituted for Rosenberg in the second half. 5

Best off the bench - Mikael Lustig: Tried to offer more going forward than Granqvist. Sound in defence. 5

England

Joe Hart: Good distribution and good starting position to sweep behind defence. Got a hand to Mellberg’s strike but deflected in by Johnson’s chest. Should have come and dealt with cross for second goal. 6

Glen Johnson: Important challenge on Ibrahimovic after 15 minutes and Elm after 55 minutes. Got forward at every opportunity to support Milner. Unlucky to deflect Sweden’s first goal into the net. Tried desperately to clear it off the line. England’s best defender. 7

John Terry: Committed performance. Made some vital interventions. Lack of pace exposed by Ibrahimovic. As defensive leader, he must question why Mellberg found himself free and unchallenged for his second goal. 6

Joleon Lescott: Kept Elmander quiet. Dealt capably with Swedish attacks. Was pushed off the ball by Ibrahimovic on one occasion. 6

Ashley Cole: Great ball to Young to provide him with shooting chance in first half. Did come inside often and left space for Ibrahimovic to exploit behind him. 6

Steven Gerrard: Outstanding cross for Carroll goal. Fantastic movement. Pressured Swedish midfield with intensity. Outstanding work rate. Led by example. Drove forward and supported forwards. 8

Scott Parker: Unleashed a stunning drive from the edge of the box which Isaksson dealt with smartly. Industrious performance. Did everything simply but efficiently. 6

Ashley Young: Greedy with chance in first half. Decided not to square to Welbeck or Carroll and shoot from difficult angle. Displayed poor first touch. Offered no real width. Kept coming inside. Did not track Mellberg for first Swedish goal. 4

James Milner: Provided lots of crosses. Forced Martin Olsson into mistakes. Tracked back and supported Johnson when needed. Pushed in and covered Gerrard when he went forward. Replaced by Walcott after 60 minutes. 5

Andy Carroll: Superb header for goal. Towered above Swedish defence. Excellent work rate. Chased down every ball. Won numerous aerial challenges. 8

Danny Welbeck: Missed header early on. Turned Jonas Olsson with sharp footwork and pace. Not as effective as Carroll. But converted awkward cross with ingenuity to score. Sublime finish. 7

Best off the bench - Theo Walcott: Fantastic strike for his goal. Immediate impact off the bench. Also showed immense turn of pace to beat two Swedish defenders for Welbeck’s goal. 8
