The injections were given after rusty nails had been discovered at the club's training ground, but the Swedish FA is angry because Ljungberg suffered an adverse reaction. The Swedish team doctor, Magnus Forsblad, said: "It is unnecessary for these injections to be made like this. They should only be done every 10 years."

Ljungberg said: "I felt very tired after training, my heart was pumping too rapidly and I felt a little faint."

The Manchester City manager, Joe Royle, has moved in for the Chilean international midfield player Clarence Acuña, who is rated at £1m. He has been invited to Maine Road to train next week.
