Arsenal were criticised by the Swedish Football Association yesterday for giving a tetanus injection to their midfield player Fredrik Ljungberg.

Arsenal were criticised by the Swedish Football Association yesterday for giving a tetanus injection to their midfield player Fredrik Ljungberg.

The injections were given after rusty nails had been discovered at the club's training ground, but the Swedish FA is angry because Ljungberg suffered an adverse reaction. The Swedish team doctor, Magnus Forsblad, said: "It is unnecessary for these injections to be made like this. They should only be done every 10 years."

Ljungberg said: "I felt very tired after training, my heart was pumping too rapidly and I felt a little faint."

The Manchester City manager, Joe Royle, has moved in for the Chilean international midfield player Clarence Acuña, who is rated at £1m. He has been invited to Maine Road to train next week.

Liverpool have agreed to release the Republic of Ireland international Steve Staunton. The 31-year-old defender, capped 85 times by his country, says he expects to be with a new club "very soon".

Diego Maradona will visit Dundee within the next few weeks to watch his friend and fellow Argentinian Claudio Caniggia play, after the 33-year-old joined the Dens Park club on Wednesday.

Ipswich Town have pulled out of a proposed move to sign the Belgian international midfielder Gert Verheyen for £1.7m, after his team Club Bruges rejected their bid. Tottenham are poised to put their goalkeeper Ian Walker up for sale, a move that is likely to alert Celtic.
