6 mins: 1-0

Germany, having settled quickly, look much the more comfortable side. Patient, measured passing, starting with Liverpool's Dietmar Hamann on the halfway line, leads to a rapid, clinical goal. Hamann finds Michael Ballack, who crosses to Oliver Neuville. His header is met by Carsten Jancker, who bursts through to open the scoring.

12 mins: 1-1

David Beckham's free-kick from the left reaches Steven Gerrard on the right of the box. He hooks the ball back towards the 'D'. Gary Neville nods it deftly forward. Nick Barmby cushions it down to the right with his head. Oliver Kahn, distracted by Barmby, is helpless as Michael Owen executes a scissors volley.

22 mins: Deisler's chance

Neuville takes possession to the right of the England box and slots a pass to the playmaker Sebastian Deisler. It seems inevitable the home side will regain their advantage. Deisler, unmarked a few yards from the open net, incredibly scuffs wide.

40 mins: Neuville's miss

England are dominating proceedings but the game still hangs in the balance. Neuville, who has been left unmarked, receives a cross on his chest just outside the box. He has space and time to turn and hit a powerful volley. It flies wide to leave the scores level.

45 mins: Seaman's save

Jorg Bohme strides forward from defence, exchanges passes with Jancker, and thumps a low, hard shot towards the bottom corner of the England goal. David Seaman does exceptionally well to dive a distance to his right and push the ball around the post for a corner.

45 mins: 1-2

In first-half stoppage time, Beckham's free-kick from the right hits a defender and returns to him. His cross reaches Rio Ferdinand, who sees Gerrard in space behind him and heads back. Gerrard controls on his chest and lashes home emphatically from 25 yards.

48 mins: 1-3

Beckham curls in a left-foot cross from the right. Emile Heskey, close to the penalty spot, meets it with a precise cushion header, which falls to Owen on the right edge of the six-yard box. Owen hits another scissors volley. It whizzes past a helpless Kahn.

58 mins: Ballack blunders

Germany are shaken and losing shape but not totally out if it. Not until another bad miss, that is. Deisler lofts the ball in from the right and Jancker heads it back towards Ballack. The midfielder, unmarked and in plenty of space less than 10 yards from goal, skies it wildly.

66 mins: 1-4

Gerrard wins the ball from Ballack on the right of midfield. He plays a delicious through-ball to Owen that dissects the home defence. Owen's blistering pace is too much for the opposition to handle, as is his precision for Kahn. Owen picks his spot and hits it for his hat-trick, doing a somersault in celebration.

74 mins: 1-5

Paul Scholes plays a one-two with Beckham that starts just behind the centre circle in his own half and ends half way inside the German half, where he squares the ball to Heskey. Heskey takes his time as he holds off Marko Rehmer and taps past the shell-shocked goalkeeper Kahn from inside the box.
