Uruguay vs England: Carlos Carballo will take charge as Three Lions look for crucial win

Spanish referee sent off Bastian Schweinsteiger against Manchester United

Spanish referee Carlos Velasco Carballo will be in charge of England’s upcoming encounter against Uruguay on Thursday.

The 43-year-old may be remembered for sending off Bayern Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger in their Champions League quarter-final clash against Manchester United in April.

Velasco Carballo also courted controversy in the opening match of Euro 2012 when he sent off goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny for hosts Poland as well as Greek defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos.

The La Liga official will be joined by compatriots Roberto Alonso Fernandez and Juan Carlos Yuste Jimenez on the sidelines.

He refereed six Champions League fixtures this season including that controversial tie at Old Trafford where Wayne Rooney was subsequently accused of diving to get the German midfielder sent off.

Velasco Carballo, who is a former industrial engineer born in Madrid, did not take charge of any games involving the Spanish capital’s clubs – Real and Atletico – because of his affiliation to the city.

England’s crunch Group D clash against Uruguay will be Velasco Carballo’s first game of the World Cup and the Three Lions will be hoping for a good game from the man in black.
