It looks as though England may have finally found the answer out wide in the shape of Adam Johnson.

The young Manchester City winger has scored two goals in two competitive appearances (both from the bench) and has given England fans a glimmer of hope for the future.

The wide positions have been a huge problem for England in recent years. Not since David Beckham and Joe Cole made the positions their own building up to and during the 2006 World Cup (in which the pair played every game) have England enjoyed a balanced and consistent side.

Here we take a look at those who have tried, but failed, to fill the vacancies.
