Made two goals with set pieces and outshone Gerrard

DAVID JAMES 5

A difficult game for a goalkeeper but did not inspire confidence with one hurried clearance and one fumbling save. Fortunate that other keepers are not in prime form.

WES BROWN 6

Rarely tested defensively and remains Capello's first choice ahead of Glen Johnson. Delivered a perfect cross for Wayne Rooney to score a Manchester United goal.

RIO FERDINAND 7

Solid and led from the front with a rare England goal for crucial breakthrough. Like Brown, failed to see any danger when Ashley Cole committed his howler for Kazakh goal.

MATTHEW UPSON 5

Neglected to take the chance to establish himself definitively as first reserve at centre-back but may still be given another chance in Belarus if John Terry remains unfit.

ASHLEY COLE 3

Already caught out two or three times before his ghastly aberration. Unloved reputation then caught up with him in widely-condemned reaction from Wembley crowd.

STEVEN GERRARD 4

More questions than answers, yet again. Played in different role in each half but still remained below-par and has now given the manager a huge selection dilemma.

GARETH BARRY 5

Finds holding position restrictive and therefore not at his best. But unfortunate to be sacrificed at half-time for benefit of team, just as he was in home game against Croatia.

FRANK LAMPARD 7

Renewed confidence from club form enabled him to make the forward runs he thrives on to dangerous effect. Made two goals with set pieces and outshone Gerrard.

THEO WALCOTT 6

In sharp contrast to the team as a whole, he had a bright first half, then faded. May not be a bad thing in dampening the hype and reminding him there is still much to learn.

EMILE HESKEY 6

Tended to be isolated in first half but profited from Wayne Rooney's closer support later. Stayed on for 90 minutes and almost grabbed a goal at the finish.

WAYNE ROONEY 7

Clearly less dangerous and more frustrated when stuck out wide, where the manager insisted he stayed until half-time. Happier thereafter, two poacher's goals improving his international ratio.

SHAUN WRIGHT-PHILLIPS (for Barry, h-t) .....................

Livened team up, whether driving through the middle or from the wing. 6

DAVID BECKHAM (for Walcott, 79) .....................

Still good for late cameo against tiring defence. 7

JERMAIN DEFOE (for Rooney, 87) ..........................................

Made his three minutes count with a typical goal. 7
