For Jason Shackell, this was the homecoming from hell. His return to Burnley, the club he had captained to the Premier League, began well enough with a warm handshake from his former manager, Sean Dyche.

From there it went rapidly downhill. His decision to leave Turf Moor for Derby in the summer was mocked by fans waving their wallets and by the end he had conceded a penalty and deflected Scott Arfield’s long-range shot into his own net. It was not as if Shackell could turn to his partner in central defence for reassurance. Richard Keogh had scored an own goal and conceded the first penalty.

This emphatic, if slightly lopsided, win pushed Burnley into third in the Championship. They can go into their glamour FA Cup tie, at Arsenal, in rather better shape than Derby, who face Manchester United on Friday. Paul Clement’s side have not won in the league since Boxing Day and this is beginning to resemble the kind of slump that cost Steve McClaren his job last season.

Just before kick-off, it seemed there might not be a game at all. The lights on one of Turf Moor’s two pylons resolutely refused to turn themselves on and then, gradually, they came to life. For the home side, this was something of an omen. They began as if drained of energy.

Derby may have started faster and sharper but it was Burnley who took the lead. As Matthew Lowton sent in a cross from the right, Keogh, playing in a clear plastic mask to protect a nose broken in three places against Reading, and under pressure from Andre Gray, headed past his own keeper, Scott Carson.

Burnley had not really deserved their lead and it lasted precisely 26 seconds. After celebrating wildly, Burnley’s goalkeeper-captain Tom Heaton was soon making different kinds of gestures to his defenders for allowing Chris Martin to turn on the edge of the area to send over a gorgeous flick for Jacob Butterfield to volley home from 20 yards.

The home side were much more assured after the interval. Some of Arfield’s touches drew “oles” from the crowd and one slipped Gray through. Keogh, who was having a match to forget, came across and brought him down. Gray converted his own penalty and within four minutes Burnley were to have another as Shackell handled Lowton’s punt into the area. Sam Vokes’ penalty, like Gray’s, was straight down the middle.
